As a young punk I picked up a used copy of Cacophany because I had heard a lot about Rudimentary Peni. What I found on the record was a long ways from the driving and dark punk that most people know the band for.
Somehow it worked out for me. I'd just discovered the short stories of H.P. Lovecraft and I was ready for the bizarre, off kilter collection of songs, sound collages, and spoken work performances that is RP's commentary on his works. "Howard was a twitch boys and girls, and that's all there is to it."
To this day Cacophany is one of my favorite records by Rudimentary Peni, and I honestly don't think they have ever made a bad record.
This remains one of the most successfully adventurous punk records ever made.
